We cannot talk about nickel alloys without mentioning Monel, Incoloy, Inconel & Hastelloy grades. Monel 400, Monel 401, Monel 404, Monel K500, Monel R-405 are the main Monel types to be introduced. When it comes to nickel alloy Incoloy, Incoloy800, Incoloy 800H, Incoloy 825, Incoloy 901, Incoloy 925, Incoloy 926 and Incoloy A-286 are the common types that enjoy wide popularity in industrial application. We will introduce Inconel & Hastelloy types separately in the later chapters. Stay with CIVMATS and keep informed.

A book of Monel & Incoloy Nickel Alloy Types

Monel Types

Monel 400

Monel 400 is a corrosion-resistant alloy featuring high heat resistance, high ohmic resistance, and also good corrosion resistance to various non-oxidized halogens.

Monel 401

Monel 401 is a Monel 400-like nickel-based alloy with very low Curie temperature, very low magnetic properties and good brazing properties. When it comes to processing method, the traditional technique for iron-based materials are also applicable to Monel 401, such as TIG and MIG techniques. Type Monel 401 are mainly used for valve stems, pump shafts, impellers, conveyor scrapers, oil well drill rings, elastic parts, valve mats, etc.

Monel 404

Monel 404 is a corrosion-resistant alloy with excellent overall properties. The alloy exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in hydrofluoric acid and fluorine gas media; besides, it features good corrosion resistance to hot concentrated alkali liquor. Monel 404 is also resistant to corrosion by neutral solutions, water, sea water, the atmosphere, organic compounds, etc.

Monel K500

Monel K500 features excellent mechanical properties such as high strength, corrosion resistance and non-magnetic properties, apart from sharing the same corrosion resistance of Monel 400. The alloy can be used as pump shaft material, suitable for working under harsh geological conditions of high sulfur and high wax oil layers.

Since Monel K500 has no plastic-brittle transition temperature, it is very suitable for various cryogenic equipment. It is mainly used for pump shafts and valve stems, conveyor scrapers, oil well drill rings, elastic parts, valve pads and so on, and suitable for petroleum, chemical, shipbuilding, pharmaceutical, and electronic sectors.

Monel R-405

Monel R-405 alloy (UNS N04405) is a machinable nickel alloy with the addition of sulphur in the Monel 400 composition to enhance its machinability.

Incoloy Types

Incoloy 800

Incoloy 800 is suitable for use in the condensation condition of F-, Cl- and ammonia acid medium, with good corrosion resistance in H2SO4, HNO3 and its mixed solution. The alloy is also resistance to pressure corrosion and polyethylene corrosion. Incoloy 800 is mainly used in nuclear generators, water heaters, gas coolers, waste steam boilers.

Incoloy 800H

Incoloy 800H is a widely used corrosion-resistant nickel alloy with excellent mechanical properties, workability and weldability. The alloy is resistant to corrosion by steam, soft water, steam-air-CO2 mixture, various acid solutions, salts and H2S.

Incoloy 825

Incoloy 825 is resistant to oxide stress corrosion and oxidation-reduction composite medium corrosion. It features good resistance to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and also various acid solutions to some extent. Incoloy 825 is commonly used in oil and gas pipelines, oil and steam coolers, nuclear waste disposal equipment, and components used in acid gases.

Incoloy 901

Incoloy 901 is an austenitic age hardening alloy, with the addition of titanium, aluminum and equivalent strengthening elements on the basis of Fe-43Ni-12Cr. It also contains traces of boron and lower carbon.

Incoloy 925

Incoloy 925 is a Mo-Cu nickel based alloy containing 19.5-23.50% chromium and 42.0-26.0% nickel. The alloy features excellent hot working and cold working properties.

Incoloy 926

Incoloy 926 is a nickel-based alloy containing titanium and aluminum. It contains adequate chromium to form and maintain sufficient scale of chromium oxide to protect it under high temperatures conditions. Incoloy 926 is more resistant to high temperatures than conventional chrome-nickel stainless steel such as 304.

Incoloy A-286

Incoloy A-286 is a type of nickel based super alloy with the addition of molybdenum, titanium, aluminum, vanadium and traces of boron to strengthen its comprehensive performance. It features good processing plasticity and satisfactory welding performance. Fe-25Ni-15Cr exhibits high yield strength and long-lasting, creep strength under temperatures below 650 ° C, suitable for fabrication of high-temperature bearing components for aerospace engines operating at temperatures below 650 °C, such as turbine disks, press plates, rotor blades and fasteners.
