STAINLESS STEEL 253MA
Overview
253MA is a lean heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel developed for applications requiring high creep strength and good corrosion resistance. Its balanced chemical compositions give this steel the optimum overall performance under temperature range of 850 °C-1100 °C, and extremely high oxidation resistance. It produces oxide skin when temperature achieves up to 1150°C.
Features of Inox 253MA
253MA features extremely high creep resistance and creep rupture strength, good resistance to high temperature corrosion and brush corrosion in most gaseous media, high yield strength and tensile strength at high temperatures; good formability and weldability, as well as enough machinability.
Apart from the alloying elements chromium and nickel, 253MA stainless steel also contains a few rare earth metals, which significantly enhance its antioxidant capacity. Nitrogen is added to improve creep properties and make this steel a complete austenite. Despite its relatively low chromium and nickel contents, 253MA shares the same high temperature properties as the high alloyed alloy steel and nickel-based alloy in many applications. It obtains high temperature resistance by controlling trace elements. The combination of niobium and silicon gives the material an excellent oxidation resistance at temperature up to 1093 °C. The combination of nitrogen, carbon and niobium gives it a creep strength twice as high as that of grade 310 and 309 at temperature of 871 °C.
253 MA features excellent oxidation resistance at temperatures below 1093 °C, above which, its oxidation resistance will decrease. The metallic elements of silicon and rare earth elements contribute to their excellent oxidation resistance. The rare earth element enhances the diffusion rate of silicon and continuously produces an oxide layer of SiO 2 silica, which slows down the development of oxidation. The rare earth element metal also improves the adhesion and elasticity of the oxide layer and can even operate under cyclic conditions. The dominant rare earth element added is lanthanum which increases the nucleation sites of oxides to form a better chromia and silica tissue layer.
