STAINLESS STEEL 303
Overview
Austenite 303 is known as free cutting stainless steel. The addition of high content of sulfur (0.15% at minimum) gives it excellent machining property, though it at the same time lowers its corrosion resistance and toughness a bit in comparison with the traditional 8Ni-18Cr stainless steel. Stainless steel 303 is non-magnetic, and not hardenable by heat treatment. Type 303 is always used for situations where enhanced machinability and surface roughness are required. The most common form is 303 stainless steel grinding rod (also named precision ground 303 stainless steel round bar, 303 stainless steel ground shaft).
Features of Stainless Steel 303
Grade 303 is designed to enhance machinability on the foundation of stainless steel 304. It is the most readily machinable 300 series stainless steel. Grade 303 features relatively good corrosion resistance, but not recommendable to be used in moist salty environment. Like all other common austenitic stainless steels, type 303 is not suggested to get exposed to chlorides at temperatures above 60°C which can incur corrosion crack. 303 stainless steel can exhibit good oxidation resistance at temperatures below 927°C, but continuous use at temperatures above 760°C can incur carbide precipitation and do harm.
Density: 8.00g/cm3
