Overview

Type 302 stainless steel is another widely used austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel, especially in wire form, i.e., 302 stainless steel spring wire. 302 stainless steel can also be regarded as a higher carbon version of type 304 with less chromium. Type 302 has 0.15% carbon at maximum (304 ≦0.08%) and 17%~19% chromium (304: 18%~20%). While this contributes to higher strength of 302, it reduces its corrosion resistance ability. Due to lower chromium content, 302 is less costly than 304. Now in practical applications, apart from 302 SS wires, 302 stainless steel bars of different shapes are as readily made as 304 stainless steel bars. It’s important to mark “AISI’’ before 304, or specifically note 18Cr after 304, or many suppliers will use 302 to replace 304 for lower cost.

Features of Stainless Steel 302

Grade 302 has good resistance to solvent, acid, and a wide range of moderately oxidizing to moderately reducing environments. 302 stainless steel also features excellent strength and ductility under high temperatures. Type 302 exhibits a high ease of weldability, and can be readily drawn, spun, and upset. Hence, it is very appropriate for stamping and forming applications. After cold work, 302 stainless steel will present weak magnetism, while afterwards annealing can remove its magnetism and maintain its previous corrosion resistance. Like 304, 302 is supposed to work under a temperature of 926 °C.
