STAINLESS STEEL XM-19
Overview
XM-19 (S20910) stainless steel, also known as Nitronic 50 and Fermonic 50 is a highly alloyed austenite with higher content of chromium (Cr: 20.5%~23.5%), nickel content (Ni: 11.5%~14.5%) & molybdenum (Mo: 1.50%~3.00%) than common 300 series. Thus, it possesses excellent corrosion resistance. With the addition of 0.2%~0.4% nitrogen, XM-19 is also known as nitrogen-strengthened (or nitrogen-enhanced) stainless steel. The high nitrogen added, pinned down with rare elements Cb (0.1%~0.3%), gives XM-19 better wear resistance, work hardening and higher strength without much compromise on the steel impact toughness. The high content of manganese (Mn: 4.0%~6.0%) allows XM-19 to stay non-magnetic after cold work or under zero temperatures. With another rare element of vanadium (V: 0.1%~0.3%) added, the heat resistance and other mechanical properties of XM-19 are improved as well. XM-19 stainless steel, initially developed for marine environment and wear parts, has gained popularity in all walks of life for its excellent properties.
XM-19 are categorized into three different conditions, i.e., annealed, as-rolled & high strength. Whichever condition is chosen, it is rolled at first. While annealed condition is followed with annealing at high temperature, high-strength condition is done at a lower temperature after the original rolling process.
Features of Stainless Steel XM-19 / Nitronic 50
Grade XM-19 or Nitronic 50 features excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength at the same time.
In terms of corrosion resistance, XM-19 / Nitronic 50 possesses superb resistance to general corrosion and outperforms type 316(L) & 317(L) in many media. Its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN), on a par with duplex stainless steel 2205, exceeds 34, while the PREN of common 300 series grades is only 25. XM-19 / Nitronic 50 also shows better resistance to crevice corrosion than 316(L). However, XM-19 is not suitable for uses in hot chloride ion containing circumstances as it can be subjected to stress corrosion cracking like 304 & 316.
Regarding to mechanical properties, XM-19 / Nitronic 50 possesses outstanding mechanical properties at both high and sub-zero temperatures. At room temperatures, the yield strength of XM-19 / Nitronic 50 is twice as high as 316(L), 317(L). In the cold-worked condition, XM-19 / Nitronic 50 exhibits three times as high yield strength as 316L. Meanwhile, XM-19 / Nitronic 50 boasts better impact strength than other austenitic grades across a wide range of temperatures. XM-19 / Nitronic 50 is non-magnetic under cold-worked condition and remains low magnetic permeability even when temperature is plunged to below -400 ̊F. It has better corrosion resistance in annealed condition but higher strength under cold-work condition where bolts and shafts applications are commonly seen.
