Overview
309S stainless steel is a close variant of 309. With all other chemical compositions the same, 309S has lower carbon content, i. e., 0.08% at maximum (while 309: 0.20% at maximum). This makes 309S quite easy for welding. The lower carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation in the heat zone of the welds and thus avoid inter granular corrosion which can otherwise happen in the welds. 309S is non-magnetic after annealed and presents weak magnetism as cold worked.
Features of Stainless Steel 309S
Grade 309S is always used as heat resistant stainless steel. It exhibits good strength under room and elevated temperatures. 309S stainless steel can withstand repeated heating up to a temperature of 980 ℃. Due to high content of chromium and nickel, 309S also features good corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Meanwhile, type 309S performs excellent resistance to sulfite liquors, nitric-sulfuric acid mixtures, nitric acid, lactic acids, acetic, and citric. The most common application is for furnace material.
