STAINLESS STEEL 420
Overview
420 Stainless steel is a type of hardenable martensitic steel, an “higher carbon” version of 410. Martensite 420 is developed to improve the hardness and strength properties of 410 while maintaining the same content of chromium. 12% minimum Chromium of stainless steel 420 is not high in comparison with the typical austenitic grade 304 which contents 18% minimum chromium. However, this content is sufficient to give it anti-corrosion properties, which makes alloy 420 categorized as stainless steel, rather than carbon steel. Due to decreased ductility at subzero temperatures and lowered strength after over tempering at increasingly high temperatures, its applications are limited. This makes stainless steel 420 seldom welded, like 420 welded tubes rarely seen.
Features of 420 Stainless Steel
420 stainless steel features high strength, but poor plasticity and weldability. Due to the high carbon content, 420 stainless steel features high strength, hardness and wear resistance. Since its corrosion resistance is slightly poor, it is generally used to those parts that have special requirements on mechanical properties but relatively low requirements on corrosion resistance, such as varied precision machineries, bearings, electric devices, equipment, instruments, meters, transportation tools, household appliances, and the like.
