Overview
Stainless steel round bars can be supplied in black, peeled, bright, polished and ground finishes. Among all, stainless steel polished bars are the most popular.
It is quite easy to distinguish bright finish from black finish, but it is hard to differentiate between ground finish and polished finish. This article will introduce the difference between stainless steel ground bars and stainless steel polished bars in terms of appearance, purposes, applications, as well as pricing.
Appearance
Stainless steel ground bars and stainless steel polished bars are both of bright and smooth finish. However, stainless steel ground bars are darker when placed together with stainless steel polished bars, but with better texture. Stainless steel polished bars are shinier.
Purposes
Since stainless steel polished bars are shinier, why stainless steel ground bars are necessary? It is for tolerance control that determines basically which finish will be chosen from the two.
Stainless steel polished bars can be controlled at h11 tolerance by default while stainless steel ground bars can be controlled at h9 tolerance for most sizes. For tighter tolerance, stainless steel ground bars can even be controlled at (-0.02mm, 0). Hence, stainless steel ground bars are of better straightness as well.
Although stainless steel ground bars can be controlled at better tolerance in terms of diameter, the length is limited up to 3 meters. In contrast, stainless steel polished bars are flexible with the length, such as being polished at 9 meters long or even longer.
Applications
Stainless steel ground bars, due to the better tolerance, are applied into situations where high precision is required, such as precision equipment and instrument.
Stainless steel polished bars are applied to situations when surface roughness is required, such as home appliances, auto parts and medical equipment.
Pricing
As stainless steel ground bars are more complicated in process and stricter in precision requirement, they are typically more expensive than stainless steel polished bars. The delivery time is also imaginably longer.
However, this is not always true. For certain applications, stainless steel round bars can be required to polished so shiny that each piece is packed individually as finished product after being polished. Such being the case, the polished costs rocket so high that each stainless steel polished bars will be priced per meter rather than per weight.
