Overview
There are roughly five surface processing techniques applicable to stainless steel, i.e., rolling surface processing, mechanical surface processing, chemical surface processing, anilox surface processing and color surface processing to be introduced in the next chapter. These methods can be used together to produce more final products. There are also some dedicated surface processing techniques, but regardless of which surface processing method is specified, these steps are necessary to follow:
1. Talk with your manufacturer for the required surface processing. It is advisable to prepare a sample as the standard for future productions.
2. When it comes to large-scale surface processing, such as composite panels, it must be ensured that all the base plates or coils are from the same batch.
3. Mirror-finish stainless steel are not advisable to be used in sensitive areas. In many construction applications, such as inside the elevator, although fingerprints can be removed, they are not pleasing to the eye. Alternatively, if the cloth surface is selected, the fingerprints will be less obvious.
4. Production process should be taken into account when it comes to selection of surface processing method. Take checkered plates for instance, to remove weld beads, it might be necessary to repair the weld seams meanwhile to restore the original surface processing. Thus, it becomes very difficult or even impossible for the checkered plates.
5. For some surface processing, grinding or polishing the texture can be directional, known as unidirectional. If the line is made vertical rather than horizontal when using, the dirt will not be easy to adhere to the surface meanwhile easy to clean.
6. Be cautious when choosing surface processing. Whatever kind of finishing adopted will increase the process steps and hence the cost. As a result, all the stakeholders such as architects, designers and manufacturers need to understand the surface processing of stainless steels. Sincere cooperation and mutual exchange will bring out the desired results.
7. Experience demonstrates that alumina is not ideal to be used as the abrasive unless it is used very carefully. In contrast, sic abrasives are way more preferable.
