The choice of surgical implant material matters so much, as it is implanted in human body. It affects the wellbeing of the patients and also the success rate of the surgical procedures. The material biocompatibility, functionality and durability are the key factors in the material selection. Other factors such as bacterial adhesion, peri-implant diseases are also considered when it comes to the most appropriate material. Up to date, titanium and stainless steel have been widely applied as surgical implant materials for the apparent advantages like non-toxic property, excellent corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, biocompatibility and long service life.

Medical Use

Stainless steel and titanium materials have been increasingly used in varied walks of life, with the industrial use as the predominant. They seem so common in our lives, as we can easily see the stainless steel kitchenware and also the titanium pan, the titanium frame for our iPhone. However, high-end industries like aerospace and for medical use, the requirements on the stainless steel and titanium material are way higher. As the material purity matters the quality, the melting method is totally different from that of the generally used material. For example, AOD melted stainless steels are widely used in industrial applications, such as chemical factories, petroleum and gas, construction, ship building etc. However, for aerospace and medical use, they are not sufficient; vacuum melting is indispensable. In many specifications, the melting method has even been specified and listed for quality control. Despite the similar chemical compositions, the different melting method can affect material purity and mechanical properties. The price difference of the same grade can thus be ocean wide. Don¡¯t get amazed then, after all, the small quantity of high-end industry materials can last long.

At Civmats, we have introduced stainless steel and titanium materials for surgical implant purpose. The specifications we strictly follow are as below listed:
