When we talk about stainless steel, austenitic 300 series stainless steels are the first thought that comes into our mind if it is not the only one. Most businesses related to this field are familiar with stainless steel seamless pipes in grades 304(L), 316(L), 321, 310S to name just a few. These grades do have impressive applications in almost every walk of life, ranging from civil use to higher-end applications such as military defense and aerospace. Today, let’s explore something different where CIVMATS is excelled in, martensitic stainless steel seamless pipes, represented by 410 stainless steel seamless pipes & 420 stainless steel seamless pipes.

Martensitic stainless steels represented by 410 & 420 are similar to ferritic stainless steel 430 in that they contain quite similar chromium and nickel contents. As is known, stainless steel is corrosion resistant through the process of passivation, which happens with at least 10.5% chromium contained in the Fe-Cr alloys. Below that par value, passivation is not going to happen. Look at the chemical composition data as below for a quick comparison.

Chemical Compositions (%)
Grade C Si Mn P S Ni Cr
Martensite SS 410

These chemical compositions are referenced directly from GB T 14975, standard specification for seamless stainless steel pipes for structural applications. At Civmats, we produce and stock GB T 14975 martensitic stainless steel seamless pipes.

Other specification applied to martensitic stainless steel seamless tubes: ASTM A268/A268M-24, standard specification for seamless and welded ferritic and martensitic stainless steel tubing for general service.

A simple glimpse of the above data will lead us to believe the difference among Martensite 410, Martensite 420 & Ferrite 430 lies mainly in the chromium content. However, this is misleading information. Actually, the difference lies in carbon content. In practice, 430 carbon content can go as low as 0.01% as shown in below example (table 1) excerpted from TISCO Material Test Certificate 430 stainless steel coils. On the contrary, martensitic stainless steel carbon content rarely goes below 0.1%. 420 even has two versions of carbon content which to distinguish, we call 420J1, the low-carbon martensitic stainless and 420J2 the high carbon martensitic stainless steel. In case of order 420 stainless steel seamless pipe, the carbon content should be clearly specified.

Table 1

The high carbon content which sets martensitic stainless steel apart from ferritic stainless and austenitic stainless steel also makes martensitic stainless steel remarkably hard and strong. Martensitic stainless steel can be hardened and tempered according to specific application through ways of aging or heat treatment. At Civmats, we can also do extra heat treatment to martensitic stainless steel seamless pipes produced for structural applications as per GB T 14975 at a handsome quantity.
